Public Speaking: Dueling Flip Charts
Here is a very interesting way to use flip charts when public speaking. Put one on both sides of the stage and pop back and forth between them. You can have an audience member volunteer at each flip chart helping you record input from other audience members. This has a tremendous 'Wake em Up' value because * You have audience members on stage, * You are in the audience, and * Audience members are providing the input. You are not limited to doing this with flip charts. You could have duel overhead projectors for larger crowds. You could still even have your darned old PowerPoint on a screen in the middle. You could even have flip charts placed all around the room so they are ready when...

The Role of the Public Speaker
Throughout the years of my life, I have addressed many people through public speaking. I have also met many, who could not make themselves go before an audience, in spite of their, deep personal knowledge, of interesting subject matter. If you are having this troubling experience, read on, and we will explore some of the tricks, and tribulations, of public speaking. One of the most frightening experiences a public speaker may encounter is; walking out on the stage and seeing hundreds of people in the audience. This can be overwhelming to public speakers, even those with years of experience. One might try to look at your audience, intently. Seems aggressive to some people, but, this is...

Top Author, Speaker & Consultant Says: Real Professionals Get Paid!
There are some wonderful artists that have created lovely and breathtaking paintings. They have produced numerous works; objects of true beauty, and many people with and without a trained eye would say they are gifted. But if they haven’t sold any of their pieces, these artists aren’t professionals. Don’t get me wrong, they’re making themselves happy, and perhaps their friends and family, and all of us would agree that they’re individuals of rare achievement. Still, they aren’t pro’s. The age old distinction applies, whether you’re a writer, a speaker, a bowler, a consultant, or a painter. You’re an amateur if you do it without payment. And what do I mean by being paid? EXAMPLE: I...

Keynote Speaker - Determining A Speakers Worth

Author:
Yvon Douran

There are many factors that come into play when it comes to determining a speaker’s worth in terms of the fees they charge to speak.

1. Who they are - do they have name recognition? a. Do they have name recognition because they are an expert on a certain topic? b. Do they have name recognition in a certain field or industry? c. Do they have public name recognition or corporate name recognition?

2. How unique are they in terms of what they speak about? Are they considered to be the number one expert on this topic or in this field?

3. How much in demand are they?

4. What kind of events they have spoken at before? What size audiences and in what kind of venues?

5. Are they being asked for by name?

6. Evaluations from past speaking engagements - how are the evaluations from attendees coming back?

7. Client testimonials - are clients sending testimonials following speaking engagements and is the speaker being booked again by the hosting company or attendees?

8. Topics - are the speakers topics more general in nature?
a. Are the speaker’s topics more specific and well framed?
b. Is the speaker using the platform as a marketing opportunity (to market themselves and their products) ?
c. Are they using the platform to deliver a presentation that is thought provoking and provides take away value?

9. Credentials can play a big part in what people are able to get for speaking.

10. The length of time involved – how long will they be required to be on the platform? Will they be asked to attend any other functions (dinners, meet and greet etc)?

11. Location – where is the meeting being held and how far does the speaker have to travel to get there.

12. Does the speaker have a book on the New York Times best- seller list?
a. Has the speaker had much media coverage?
b. Have articles been written about them?
c. Have they been interviewed for publications?
d. Have they been quoted as the authority on a certain topic?

There is no simple answer to what fee a speaker can command or how that fee is determined. Generally the higher profile they have and the more in demand they become the higher their fee will be.

Public Speaking Fear? Why You SHOULD Be Afraid
Like most pubic speaking consultants, I usually hammer all the reasons a person should not be afraid of presenting. However, the more coaching I do, the more I realize the fear is legit. People should be afraid of getting in front of a group. While there is a lot to gain from speaking publicly, there is also a lot to lose. Here are seven reasons to be scared… Number One: No skill. Would you want someone repairing your car that knows nothing about mechanics? The average speaker receives no training, takes no classes, and doesn’t read one book on presenting. He or she expects to do an adequate job with no experience. Number Two: Not Fearing Death The OLD adage is that public speaking is the #1 fear. If you would RATHER die than speak, then you don’t need to be speaking. Period. If you spillover Niagara Falls walking a tightrope, you’re going to die and it will all be over. When speaking you won’t die. You’ll live to face the embarrassment, the whispers, and the snickers. But you’ll still be alive. If you look forward to a Niagara, yet look away from speaking then put on your swim trunks and stay away from the podium. Number Three: Failing to Organize. One of my services is critiquing the outlines of speakers. On average the format and structure is elementary at best and confusing at worse. It’s as if the speaker’s brain spewed out on a sheet of paper and left it at that. Organizing does not take long, nor is it difficult, but only a handful do it successfully. Without a proper outline the fear is understandable. Number Four: Confusing Writing and Speaking. Writing is formal. People rarely forgive errors in spelling and grammar. From this article I’ll get several people attempting to correct me. However, there is room for error when speaking. The ears...
