In the research I did on my recent public speaking trip to Thailand, I discovered that a meeting or seminar custom is to seat VIP attendees in the front row. No one of a lesser status either socially or in business would think of sitting closer to the front than their boss, or someone of a higher social ranking. This is a very loose and largely ignored custom in Western meetings, and carries a significantly higher decorum in Thailand and Asia. Bloopers are clumsy mistakes that are usually made in public. The television show 'TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes' and many blooper books are indicators of the interest we have in other people's goofs. Here are two from 'All Time Great Bloopers' by Blooper Snooper Kermit Schafer and one from 'More Press Boners' by Earle Tempel, and how you might use them in a presentation. * A while back I heard about a DJ on WIOD in Miami, Florida who said, 'This is Alan Courtney speaking. Don't forget, tonight at nine, our special guest . . . (pause) . . .will be . . . I forgot.' Well, I haven't forgotten why we are here today . . . or (For an introducer) I couldn't possibly forget who is here with us today.' * Mayor Daley of Chicago was being interviewed on TV following the riots during the Democratic convention. The mayor stated, 'The police in Chicago are not here to create disorder, they are here to preserve it. I hope I don't create or preserve any disorder in my presentation today.' * From The San Leandro, CA News: I saw a notice in the newspaper the other day. * The larger the crowd, the larger and slower the gestures. * If you have a small crowd, or if you are videoconferencing, or on television, use smaller gestures. * Work to eliminate distracting or nervous gestures, but do not kill yourself to add new ones. They will take care of themselves and most of the time they look affected. * Let your words trigger your actions. If you are counting, hold out your fingers. If you say no, shake your head no. * Hold your hands open and wide apart to show sincerity and honesty. * Hold your hands behind your back during question-and-answer sessions (don't overdo it). * Avoid excessive hands in pockets, clenched fists, pointing, hands on hips, and the infamous fig leaf position where your hands are crossed in front of your groin.
