I've talked about this tip before, but ran into the same situation again this month while doing a public speaking engagement in Morocco. The primary languages there are Arabic and French. Just arranging for an overhead projector was very difficult. When I arrived as the opening speaker (after having confirmed three times an overhead projector and screen), none was to be found in the room. The manager of the gigantic ballroom could not speak English and because of tight scheduling of other events, I was not able to be in the room early as I always am. Public Speaking: Learn Public Speaking Material Easily Using Bits (AKA Chunks or Series)

A bit is a section of public speaking material that is so related that it makes it easy for you to memorize. Each point flows naturally from one to the next so you can deliver the information without notes (if you know your material). Until I learned about bits, I never thought I could be that great at speaking because I'm not great at memorizing long talks. I discovered that no one memorizes long talks. They have a mental or written outline consisting of key words that trigger the individual bit in their minds. Pros use this concept to be able to deliver long presentations to the public without the use of notes. Becoming less dependent on notes has several advantages. When you stand before a group and speak without using notes your credibility automatically rises. The audience thinks, 'Wow! This person really knows the material.' Since you won't be tied to a lectern or forced to hold notes, you can get physically closer to the audience, or actually enter the audience on occasion. The closer you are to them, the better you will connect. When you leave the script at home you can speak naturally to the audience rather than read to them. You will also be more confident because you no longer have to worry about your notes getting lost. Using bits has another big advantage. We are busy people. It's tough to find a spare hour or day to practice a full public speaking presentation. Bits can be practiced when you have a few minutes here and there. You will be more likely to practice your material (and we all need practice) if you can practice a three or five-minute chunk rather than the whole presentation. Speaking Anxiety -- Are You One of the Many Sufferers? |

Speaking Anxiety is the number one social phobia and if you are one of the many sufferers it can make your life much more difficult than it needs to be.
There are 8 levels of Speaking Anxiety ranging from no anxiety at all to acute anxiety. These 8 levels are
Level 1.
No Anxiety. Willing and able to speak to anyone, anywhere including Public Speaking in front of large groups.
Level 2.
Able to speak to anyone and will speak to small groups when confident about the topic. An example of this is a teacher talking in front of a class.
Level 3.
Able to speak to people you know plus strangers in any situation. Strangers you might meet on a bus, train, party etc where you have to speak for an unlimited amount of time - you can't easily get away.
Level 4.
Can speak to people you know plus strangers when only a few sentences are required. Examples are shop assistants, receptionists etc.
Level 5.
YOu can speak to family, friends, work colleagues and bosses and teachers - or other people in authority.
Level 6.
Will speak to family, friends and work colleagues.
Level 7.
Will only speak to family and close friends.
Level 8.
Acute Anxiety. Only comfortable speaking to family. Most of us fall in the middle from level 5 to level 3 and can manage quite well at this level. However sometimes a change in job or family circumstances may mean we need to move from one level to another level. This can be quite easily achieved with the correct training. Confident speaking is a skill which can be learned. Some people are just naturally quiet but are confident enough to be able to speak when they have to.
