Be a Storyteller, Not Just a Speaker
Stories develop themes. The themes chosen to illustrate the possibility of stories are: Relationships, Choice, Creativity, Making a Difference, Celebration. Speakers are ordinarily people, from teachers to grandparents, from mountain climbers to cancer survivors. The platform provides them with a privilege and awesome responsibility to share their stories in a way that helps the audience to “wake up.” Good stories make people say, “Wait a minute. I can think or act differently about everything than I did before.” Stories are everywhere. Speakers learn to retrieve them and retell them to audiences as a way to show their humanness to show they care; to open people to...

Public Speaking and Panic Attacks
It is often observed that many people’s top ranking fear is not death but having to speak in public. The joke is that these people would rather be lying in the casket at the funeral than giving the eulogy. Public speaking for people who suffer from panic attacks or general anxiety often becomes a major source of worry weeks or even months before the speaking event is to occur. These speaking engagements do not necessarily have to be the traditional “on a podium” events but can be as simple as an office meeting where the individual is expected to express an opinion or give verbal feedback. The fear of public speaking and panic attacks in this case centers on having an attack while...

Speaking Suggestions to Help You Become a "Great" Speaker
Often we hear the words, “He or she is a good speaker.” When we fill out the evaluation form, we sometimes give the top score, but how many times can we really rate the presenter as “excellent” or truly “great”? In the following, I address two areas with suggestions that will help you become a “great” presenter. Energy/Enthusiasm Great presenters exude energy and enthusiasm, whether on or off the platform. I am not necessarily describing a rah-rah! type of enthusiasm and energy. What I see in many great speakers is almost a quiet, but magnetic, quality that evolves from natural energy and true enthusiasm. All of the great presenters, “Walk their talk.” They are as enthusiastic and...

Public Speaking Tips to Remember When You're on Center Stage

Author:
Emily Sanders

There are many public speaking tips you’ll need to take into consideration when writing your speech and when preparing to deliver your speech. That said, once you’re centre stage, there are a few simple (but crucial) public speaking tips to always keep in mind:

Simple Public Speaking tips to remember:

• Start every speech with a smile. Don’t think for a minute that it’s silly, a warm and endearing face will hold you audience’s attention.
• Talk a bit louder than you think necessary.
• Put some enthusiasm into your voice.
• Use some gestures to show that you are alive.
• Get up on a platform above the audience if you can (they want and need to see you).

Here are a few easy public speaking tips you might need if you’re audience gets fatigued:

Always watch the audience (at the first sign of fatigue, do something)! This may be the point to bring up the next story. But don't ignore that first yawn. Look out for your nervous habits, don't fumble with your glasses, the change in your pocket or your clothes.

If you cannot find anything to say that will wake up you audience, start asking questions. Get your audience involved or get them moving by doing group exercises.

Remember: an active mind is a happy mind!

Public Speaking: Dueling Flip Charts
Here is a very interesting way to use flip charts when public speaking. Put one on both sides of the stage and pop back and forth between them. You can have an audience member volunteer at each flip chart helping you record input from other audience members. This has a tremendous 'Wake em Up' value because * You have audience members on stage, * You are in the audience, and * Audience members are providing the input. You are not limited to doing this with flip charts. You could have duel overhead projectors for larger crowds. You could still even have your darned old PowerPoint on a screen in the middle. You could even have flip charts placed all around the room so they are ready when you break up into smaller groups. Then the results pages could be torn off and taped in a row on the wall.
