Public Speaking: Bribes
... or, as I like to call them, 'Tips in advance' are a part of my public speaking life. Does that mean I am an unethical person? ABSOLUTELY NOT! It means I am a realist. It means that when I am 30 minutes from the beginning of a presentation and I have been trying to get a projection screen for two hours, it might be time to grease a few palms. I just consider it an investment in my image. I am the one who is going to look bad if I am not prepared to begin on time. If it costs me five or ten or even twenty bucks to get some action, so what? I don't believe in penny pinching when you get in a pinch. Am I happy about this? No, I am not happy, but I am always willing to invest in...

Public Speaking - The Money's in the Template
The best public speakers in the world all agree on one thing. You can’t get good at public speaking without practice. That’s where some public speaking training seminars fail in teaching people how to do successful presentations. Lecturing someone on how to do a presentation will not make a student learn any faster. If you learn by doing, you'll achieve much higher results! After several years of public speaking engagements, teaching seminars and performing piano music for worldwide audiences, I woke up one day and realized I didn’t know the first thing about public speaking. That seems like an odd thing to say but it’s true. How did I know I wasn’t any good at it? Because, I didn’t...

Speaking Suggestions to Help You Become a "Great" Speaker
Often we hear the words, “He or she is a good speaker.” When we fill out the evaluation form, we sometimes give the top score, but how many times can we really rate the presenter as “excellent” or truly “great”? In the following, I address two areas with suggestions that will help you become a “great” presenter. Energy/Enthusiasm Great presenters exude energy and enthusiasm, whether on or off the platform. I am not necessarily describing a rah-rah! type of enthusiasm and energy. What I see in many great speakers is almost a quiet, but magnetic, quality that evolves from natural energy and true enthusiasm. All of the great presenters, “Walk their talk.” They are as enthusiastic and...

Speaker Loses Words And Money

Author:
Tara Coyt

I recently saw a phenomenal speaker. I remember being moved by his speech and desperately wanted to take his message home with me – but I couldn’t. I wanted a book, a pamphlet, or something I could hold on to – but he didn’t have it.

How could someone so powerful, so inspirational, so awesome miss this opportunity? I’m still trying to figure out how such a dynamic professional speaker could leave his audience empty handed? Better yet, how could he leave with an empty wallet?

I took a moment to calculate how much money he lost that day. If he had a book and sold it for $25 and if only half the audience (150 people) bought his book that day, he would have made $3,750. That’s almost $4,000! I don’t know about you, but I’d certainly like to make $3750 in one day.

I learned two valuable lessons that day: 1) Speakers without books, disappoint their audience. 2) Speakers without books lose money every time they speak. That’s a very expensive lesson for a speaker to learn.

Don’t make the same mistake. Don’t disappoint your audience. Don’t disappoint your wallet.

You don’t have to be a writer to become a published author - you’re a speaker, which means you’ve already got the material for a money making book. Start your book by reviewing your current topics and transform them into chapters for your book.

A good book doesn’t have to be long; it just has to be powerful. Remember, you’re not writing a novel, so shoot for 100 pages. Once you’ve compiled the major content of your book, go back and write an introduction and a closing chapter. Also, keep in mind that your audience wants to take YOU home with them, so make sure your personal style is reflected in the book.

Once your manuscript is complete, take a few days to edit it I also suggest hiring a professional editor accustomed to working with your specific genre. You’ll also benefit from writing two or three endorsements to place on the back cover. Then invest in a stunning book cover to capture the attention of potential buyers.

You don’t have to go broke publishing your book. Your speakers’ bureau may be a good place to search for affordable print-on-demand and self-publishing options, as well as other resources and support.

There’s no excuse for a speaker not to have a book. If you don’t know how to start, get help. If you don’t know how to finish, get help. Put your words on paper - write a book - and make thousands of dollars, even when you speak for free.

Be Prepared: Working With a Professional Speaker
The responsibility for choosing the speakers who will make a meeting or conference a valuable and dynamic event is a challenge faced regularly throughout the business community. If you are the one in your organization with this task, I offer some tips to arranging for the speakers that could make the difference between a routine event or a memorable learning and growing experience. First know what you want to accomplish. Then look for an expert in that field. Once you find the speaker most suitable for your needs, contact between the meeting planner and the speaker prior to the presentation is necessary. When calling a speaker, be prepared! l. What is the date, time and location of your event? Is there flexibility? Many meetings are planned before the search for a speaker begins and this could result in difficulty in getting the speaker you most desire. If you make your initial call to the speaker with two or three optional dates you will have a better chance of getting a commitment from the desired speaker. 2. What is the time available ? Professional speakers start and finish on schedule and deliver an appropriate amount of material in the allotted time. Too much material in too short a time leaves participants tired and confused. Too little information results in a bored and disinterested audience who leave the meeting lacking energy and commitment to implement the information into their lives. The time must fit the topic content to leave the participants motivated and energized. 3. What topic is required ? Why are you having this meeting ? What new information and skills do you hope to have the participants acquire ? The clearer you can be with your expectations the better the chance that your needs will be met. Giving your speaker the...

5 Ways to Use Public Speaking to Build Your Client Base
I'd give anything to travel back in time and tell my eight-year-old self that I'd eventually build a business from public speaking. In third grade, opening my mouth and speaking my mind to a group of people was a recipe for public humiliation: voice habitually quavering, thoughts lost between my brain and my headgear, and shaking so intense that my classmates sparked a rumor that I suffered from ...
