Public Speaking Courses to Overcome Your Nerves
Many of us would rather die than stand up to speak in public. You know the feeling don't you? The sweaty palms; the dry mouth and red face; the total lack of rational thought only replaced by absolute PANIC . OK maybe a little exaggerated, but I've been there myself and I've seen otherwise strong people reduced to gibbering wrecks at the thought of having to do this. Now I've also been on one or two public speaking courses - the last one was run by an actor, sorry an AC-TOR, a real thesp and we spent a lot of time breathing(?) and talking in strange accents! I'm not sure how much it helped, but the day was fun, so perhaps it did do some good. What I'm going to suggest though rather...

The Fear Of Public Speaking
Wikipedia defines public speaking as 'speaking to a group of people in a structured, deliberate manner'. Providing information to people is the main aim of public speaking. This information could be only for understanding an issue or it could be for taking an action. It is mainly a form of one-way communication. It primarily depends on the ability of the speaker whether he can only inform the listener or change and affect the views of the listener as well. Public speaking has immense power. A balanced and well delivered speech can motivate people in favor of something whereas a poor and shoddy delivery could damage a solid view point or a product. An ill-presented speech can bore...

Speaker Loses Words And Money

Author:
Tara Coyt

I recently saw a phenomenal speaker. I remember being moved by his speech and desperately wanted to take his message home with me – but I couldn’t. I wanted a book, a pamphlet, or something I could hold on to – but he didn’t have it.

How could someone so powerful, so inspirational, so awesome miss this opportunity? I’m still trying to figure out how such a dynamic professional speaker could leave his audience empty handed? Better yet, how could he leave with an empty wallet?

I took a moment to calculate how much money he lost that day. If he had a book and sold it for $25 and if only half the audience (150 people) bought his book that day, he would have made $3,750. That’s almost $4,000! I don’t know about you, but I’d certainly like to make $3750 in one day.

I learned two valuable lessons that day: 1) Speakers without books, disappoint their audience. 2) Speakers without books lose money every time they speak. That’s a very expensive lesson for a speaker to learn.

Don’t make the same mistake. Don’t disappoint your audience. Don’t disappoint your wallet.

You don’t have to be a writer to become a published author - you’re a speaker, which means you’ve already got the material for a money making book. Start your book by reviewing your current topics and transform them into chapters for your book.

A good book doesn’t have to be long; it just has to be powerful. Remember, you’re not writing a novel, so shoot for 100 pages. Once you’ve compiled the major content of your book, go back and write an introduction and a closing chapter. Also, keep in mind that your audience wants to take YOU home with them, so make sure your personal style is reflected in the book.

Once your manuscript is complete, take a few days to edit it I also suggest hiring a professional editor accustomed to working with your specific genre. You’ll also benefit from writing two or three endorsements to place on the back cover. Then invest in a stunning book cover to capture the attention of potential buyers.

You don’t have to go broke publishing your book. Your speakers’ bureau may be a good place to search for affordable print-on-demand and self-publishing options, as well as other resources and support.

There’s no excuse for a speaker not to have a book. If you don’t know how to start, get help. If you don’t know how to finish, get help. Put your words on paper - write a book - and make thousands of dollars, even when you speak for free.

Public Speaking: Bribes
... or, as I like to call them, 'Tips in advance' are a part of my public speaking life. Does that mean I am an unethical person? ABSOLUTELY NOT! It means I am a realist. It means that when I am 30 minutes from the beginning of a presentation and I have been trying to get a projection screen for two hours, it might be time to grease a few palms. I just consider it an investment in my image. I am the one who is going to look bad if I am not prepared to begin on time. If it costs me five or ten or even twenty bucks to get some action, so what? I don't believe in penny pinching when you get in a pinch. Am I happy about this? No, I am not happy, but I am always willing to invest in excellence. Also, I would rather lose a few bucks than get all worked up and upset before a public speaking engagement. In addition, any problems I am having are probably not the fault of the maintenance or set up person who gets the money. It makes me feel good to give them a little boost in their pay for that day. So, have a few small bills handy before every presentation, just in case you need to get something done quick. One more thing ... This also works when you have too much baggage at the curb side check in. An extra bag costs 50 bucks at the airline ticket counter, so I give the skycap 20 and save myself 30. It doesn't work every time, but most of the time it does. Copyright © 1998 - 2005 Advanced Public Speaking Institute Tom Antion provides entertaining speeches and educational seminars.
